The passing of ions across cellular membranes is actually facilitated by trans-membrane proteins referred to in botanical circles as ‘ion channels’ found in the roots. Mother Nature designed most ion channels to be specific to just one or a very limited range of ions. These ion channels use simple chemistry to select the type of ions that they will allow to pass through. Ion Channels can be in either of two states:

Sage Advice from Guy Green:
My advice is to keep your temperatures as near constant as possible. Grow in a well-insulated location and keep your temperature differential under 10° F if it’s practical and efficient to do so. Use a Growers Edge Thermometer to keep track of your high and low temperatures and heaters on thermostats to keep your grow room temperatures up during lights-out if required. The extra heat minimizes moisture falling out of the air and on to your buds. (Dew drop causes mold and bud rot.)

Plants that are kept at a more constant temperature tend to be more likely to grow into forms that are more conducive to indoor grow lights. If you live in one of the cooler states you should pay close attention to your minimum temperatures. Use a Min/Max thermometer to record them. If temperatures drop below 60° F (15° C) photosynthesis and plant metabolism slow to a snail’s pace! Low temperatures during bud, flower and fruit ripening, even for just one night, can retard maturation.
